Redundancy - A Christian Perspective
Nov 2008 - Steve Kingsley
“The Company must maintain its viability by reducing costs – and that means, I’m afraid, that we have to dispense with your services. We’re very sorry, but if it wasn’t for the poor prevailing economic conditions, things may be very different”
A relatively short sentence which hit me like a sledge hammer. “Why me”? I asked myself. Couldn’t it have been someone else?
Then I got back into my car and began to talk to Jesus about it. Had I been so bad? Had my sins been so deplorable that I had to face taking my family through hardship during the Christmas season? Why me Lord why? Why have you done this to me?
I had to drive two and a half hours before I could reach the solace of my home and the comforting arms of my wife and children… so I had time to think….
I recalled a book that I read recently. “The Shack” recounts the heartache of “Mac” at a time when he felt God had deserted him. It relates how he is guided to put his trust in God despite the devastation and hard times. It demonstrates that working through issues together with God, rather than maintaining a state of distant independence from Him, changes everything.
The book relates the many dialogues that take place between Mac and the persons of the Blessed Trinity……It is enthralling, enlightening and comforting – but one message stands loud and proud above the rest
“Put your trust in me, surrender to me, obey me and abide in me”.
As I recalled this message, I felt calm, collected, and cosseted in the arms of my God.
And so the long and arduous job of finding work began and still continues. I must do my bit – I can’t leave it all to Him but I know that He guides me and will not let me down.
I have times where I despair and worry hits me like a wall. But those are the times when I talk to Jesus. I put my faith back in him and He helps me through another day.
Many people are helping me and are praying for me and some have provided the following thoughts:
“A test of a Christian's character is what he does after he comes to the blockade in the road and what his attitude is after everything has left him except Jesus”.
“You will never know down here that Christ is all you need until Christ is all you have left”.
And one very perceptive young man said to me, “God parted the Red Sea – what makes you think that he won’t find you a job?”
Through all of this I know that Jesus was not instrumental in making me redundant. He is there to redeem it. He is there to help me to gain worthwhile employment and his will be done. I don’t blame Him; I don’t blame anybody. But I trust in Him, I surrender my life to Him, I listen for His commands which I obey and above all I maintain a constant dialogue with Him.
This is how I maintain the strength to cope with my predicament.

| | David Judkins | 28/11/2008 12:55 | | Thanks, Steve, for sharing your honest struggle and the way that you've dealt (and are dealing!) with a tough situation in God's grace; an inspiration to us all! I pray that God would bring about a new position very soon.

| | | David Hay (Guest) | 06/12/2008 14:19 | | I have known Steve for more than 40years and I truely believe that the Lord has a new purpose for his life.I am reminded of the older more mature Jacob who presented his desires and plans before God for his approval before taking action. That is a good lesson for us all.In Genesis 28v15 God is speaking to Jacob in a dream but he is saying it directly to us through his living word, that one sentence tells us so much about our loving Father.God bless you Steve.
| | | Tim Grice (Guest) | 08/12/2008 08:58 | | I never realised that Steve was 40! Look at Job, what an example. And the perfect example, Christ Himself, who even on the cross showed compassion to His mother and to a criminal. Continue to serve our Lord Steve and I know He will answer your prayers, in His timeframe. Never stop morving forward in faith and works.
| | | Dupe Osobu (Guest) | 08/12/2008 12:29 | | Steve, you are truly an inspiration and trust me the Lord will surely make a way for you where there seem to be no way. Thank you for sharing this word of encouragement and God bless you! The Lord is faithful come what may.
| | | Adekemi (Guest) | 27/01/2009 15:20 | | Steve Thank you so much for this article, I have recently been made redundant and found out just 10 days to Christmas and I can totally understand and relate to all the things you wrote about and thank you for sharing this as it makes me feel I am not alone and also made me look at the whole issue from a different perspective. I just have to trust God and know he is more than able to redeem the situation. God bless you and your family
| | | Stewart (AKA WorkHope) (Guest) | 16/07/2009 22:38 | | Hiya, Good article... being out of work for over 21 months myself, am now writing articles on my own REAL experiences too. Funny stories, some bizarre bits, some serious God stuff, encouragements as well as my grumpy moans. Please take a look, and pass the url on, it could be useful to anyone, Christian or otherwise. Oh yes, I'm STILL looking for work, and still hoping a book publisher will get in touch... See also Ephesians 3: 20-21. WorkHope (Mr)

Also, having just read 'The Shack' in the last couple of weeks, it might be something I could pass onto him. Amen to all you shared. God is good all the time. And all the time God is good.
